It turns out that using Vocal Rider isnt as simple as just dropping it into an insert. For those who dont know what Vocal Rider is, Waves created this plug-in to intelligently automate a vocal performances volume.
In other words, Vocal Rider is like having a mix engineer sitting there riding the fader on your recorded vocal performance.and he can repeat those volume changes over and over again.exactly the same way. Sounds like a compressor, right The difference is that a compressor can alter the sound of the vocal track and automating the level fader does not. You can get a much more open sound in your mix when using automation and not over-compressing. Vocal Rider does a very good job of automation the volume on your vocal track, but takes an extra step or two to setup in Studio One 3. ![]() NOTE: You can also choose to assign the stereo version of Vocal Rider to an Aux Track and route all your vocals to that track. Vocal Rider can automate the Aux fader, but its not guaranteed to give you the best performance. I find that automating each individual track sounds better overall. On this track, right-click the track and select ShowHide Automation. Your track should now show the Volume automation as its default. In the Automation popup window, click the Inserts folder from the right window and select Rider Fader from the list of options. NOTE: Remember that both the Rider Fader automation lane AND the WRITE button must both be switched to Write for Vocal Rider to write the automation properly to the track. Waves Vocal Rider Tutorial Free Up SomeIf you want to render the automation so you can unload Vocal Rider and free up some processor power, copy the automation from the Rider Fader track and paste it onto the Volume track. I hope this helps you get the most out of this often overlooked (and sometimes poo-pooed) plug-in that saves a ton of time and helps your mix sound better.
